Mazahir Salih

Executive Director

Mazahir Salih is the executive director and co-founder of the Immigrant Welcome Network of Johnson County (IWNJC). Before her role with IWNJC, Mazahir was the co-founder and former Executive Director of the Center for Worker Justice bringing over 20 years of advocacy experience to her role as Executive Director. Mazahir’s transformative leadership has made her the first Sudanese American to be elected to office in the US, the first Black woman, the first immigrant, and the first Muslim to be elected to the Iowa City Council, breaking barriers and inspiring countless immigrants and refugees. She currently serves as a council member and the Mayor Pro Tem of Iowa City.

Daphne Lison

Program Coordinator

Daphne has lived in the United States for so long now (since 2002) that she often forgets that she is, in fact, a South African/Israeli immigrant. With a background in library science, writing, translating and social therapy work, she is as passionate about language(s) and style as she is about social and environmental justice. She would like to give back to the community in whichever capacity she is most suited for and needed.

Grace Kelly

Community Navigator and Social Justice Intern

Grace is a senior at the University of Iowa, currently studying Criminology. Grace has a strong commitment to equity and community well-being. She has been deeply involved in service and social advocacy throughout her college experience. Joining the Immigrant Welcome Network of Johnson County has allowed her to support immigrant families through direct outreach and meaningful engagement. Grace is honored to contribute to a mission rooted in compassion, and she is dedicated to helping create a more inclusive and supportive environment for everyone who calls Johnson County home.



Naja Mohamed

Community Navigator and Social Justice Intern

Naja will be a fourth-year student at the University of Iowa in the fall. She is pursuing a degree in Sociology with a minor in African American Studies, and a certificate in Public Health. Naja is excited to to apply her skills to help integrate, assist, and support the immigrant community in Johnson County.



Kyle Pratt

Finance and Bookkeeping Intern

Kyle currently helps on the Bookkeeping side of things here at the Immigrant Welcome Network of Johnson County (IWNJC). Alongside Josh, Kyle helps manage day-to-day financial records and support the tracking of cash flows. He enjoys record keeping because it helps alleviate some back-end responsibilities so that IWNJC can focus on other priorities. Kyle is looking forward to the rest of my time here, and the opportunity to learn more about nonprofit finance while contributing to a mission that he cares about! Apart from INWJC, Kyle enjoys spending time outside, working out, and being with my family and friends


 



Sercie Gee

Community Navigator and Social Justice Intern

Sercie is a junior at the University of Iowa, where she is pursuing a degree in Public Health with a minor in Sociology and a certificate in Leadership Studies. She is also following the Pre-Law track. Sercie joined the Immigration Welcome Network of Johnson County (IWNJC) because of her deep passion for social justice, community outreach, and supporting underserved communities. These values are rooted in her personal experiences, having witnessed family and friends struggle to navigate unfamiliar systems.. 


Kaitlyn Baril

Community Navigator and Social Justice Intern

Kaitlyn will be a third-year student at the University of Iowa in the fall and will be graduating the following spring. She is pursuing a bachelors of science in global health. Kaitlyn has a strong belief in the human right to health, the thought that everyone should have access to affordable and quality care all around the world. Kaitlyn is excited to use her skills to help with the mission of the organization.  



Josh Morden

Finance and Bookkeeping Intern

Josh is a junior at the University of Iowa studying business analytics and finance. With an interest in data and accounting, he is passionate about using his skills to make a difference. Having worked and connected with immigrants, he is grateful to be able to give back to the community. Through IWNJC, he hopes to contribute meaningful work and gain valuable experience that will guide his future career. 


 



Serenity Delgado

Fundraising & Grant Writer Intern

Serenity is a second-year student at the University of Iowa studying Environmental Policy and Human Rights. She understands the importance of community building especially within underserved populations. Serenity is enthusiastic about the work done at the IWNJC and believes that working together is essential to combat injustice and provide necessary services to the immigrant community in Johnson County.

Jordan Bull-Welch

Community Navigator and Social Justice Intern

Jordan will be a fourth-year student at the University of Iowa in the fall. Jordan is pursuing a double major in Philosophy and Social Justice, with minors in Psychology and a Human Rights Certificate, through the College of Law at the University of Iowa. Jordan has a deep passion for social justice work and advocacy, which correlates with her academic career and now real-world application. She is excited to expand her network and apply the knowledge she has gained in academia to benefit the community in Iowa City.

Nhelia Alemo

Community Social Justice Navigator

Nhelia is a freshman at the University of Iowa, majoring in political science. As an immigrant from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nhelia believes that it is her obligation to help other immigrants/refugees that want to establish a life in Johnson county. Her lifelong plans involve becoming a diplomat and developing a non-profit organization that seeks to assist displaced women back in Africa.

Haitham Osman

Housing Navigator

Haitham is from Sudan and came to IWNJC in order to make a positive difference in the immigrant/refugee community in Iowa City. Haitham enjoys spending time with family and sharing his culture. As a former doctor in Saudi Arabia, Haitham is always emphasizing and educating the importance of health for immigrants who may not know the physical and mental impacts of adapting to the American lifestyle. 


Abu Omar

Social Service Navigator

Abu Omar is a father of three who values helping others in his community. As someone who has dealt with hardships of being an immigrant in America, his objective at IWNJC is to provide assistance to immigrants/refugees so they won’t have to go through the same obstacles. Abu values honesty and educating, which is why he loves to share his knowledge with those that need it.


Mohammed Aldirderi

Employment Navigator

Mohammed is currently a student at Kirkwood finishing his associates degree in computer science.  A Sudanese immigrant himself, Mohammed has firsthand experience navigating the challenges of building a new life in the United States. He finds great joy in his role as an Employment Navigator, helping immigrants secure meaningful employment and create brighter futures.
